Sustainability-focused brand Sheep Inc. has come up with an eco-friendly apparel collection, including the world’s first carbon negative hoodie. This apparel is not just a piece of garment but also an item to remove the higher amount of CO2 from the environment. Hence, it has a natural carbon negative footprint without any requirement for offsetting.
Carbon negative hoodie manufacturing journey
At its raw material stage, the company used the finest 19.5μ Merino wool coming from the regenerative sheep stations in New Zealand: Middlehurst Station, Lake Hawea Station, and Omarama Station.
All these farms use innovative feeding and grazing techniques, as well as land management methods for capturing more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than their manufacturing process emit. It makes their produced wool carbon negative. Furthermore, the carbon-negative fiber is processed by the brand’s supply chain partners in Europe for spinning the yarn and manufacturing the garment and running logistics.
The brand works with Südwolle, a German yarn mill, for spinning the finest merino wool and undergo a chlorine-free treatment called Eternity X-Care. Each hoodie is further created by Fatextil, a Portuguese specialist knitter, using 100-percent solar-powered 3D knitting machines. These sustainable machines were used to ensure there’s zero waste during the whole manufacturing process.
All the orders for these hoodies are fulfilled from their UK’s first carbon-neutral logistics partner Airbox, which also relies on totally solar-powered machines and uses electric vehicles for delivery.
100% biodegradable hoodie
Merino wool’s unique properties of zero-odor retention and self-cleansing lead to minimizing emissions while washing and drying.
Since every hoodie is 100% biodegradable, it ensures there is no trace left at the end.
In an interview, Edzard van der Wyck, CEO & Co-founder of Sheep Inc., said,
“We believe in the fashion industry’s collective responsibility to create products that work within safe, planetary boundaries. We, therefore, need to start designing products that naturally have a regenerative effect on our planet. Products that in their creation and use give back more to nature than they take, without the need to offset. This hoodie serves as a testament that this is possible. To reach a future where we design in harmony with nature.
Price and availability
The carbon negative hoodie is priced at £140 (approx. $190) and is available for purchase on the brand’s official website.
